honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
it is a great honor and pleasure to be here on this beautiful saturdaymorning to share with you my sentiments about life and passion for the englishlanguage.
about a year and a half ago, i took part in my very first english speechcontest. when i stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly atme, i could hardly speak. i stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling invain for the right thing to say. my fears had paralyzed me.
while my passion for english has never changed, i lost my courage to speakin public. when my professor again encouraged me to take part in thiscompetition, i said “no.” i couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. helooked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. i willnever forget his words. “look,” he said, “we all have our fears, and you haveyours. you could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid toever play again. running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. awinner is not one who never fails, but one who never quits.”
i spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. then imade the bravest and wisest decision of my life: i would face my fears –and takepart in the competition!
as it turned out, my dear old professor was right. now, here i am, onceagain standing before a microphone. my heart is beating fast, and my mouth isdry, but most importantly, i have faced my fears -- and that makes all thedifference!
this is a story about courage.
the brutality has such a mythical grandeur that it occasionally resemblesbeauty.
ultimately, gladiator is an honorable and inoffensive spectacle withnothing extraordinary to recommend it.
gladiator is a __ historical epic directed by ridley scott, starringrussell crowe, joaquin phoenix,.maximus rises through the ranks of thegladiatorial arena to revenge the murder of his family and hisemperor.historical epic.
the film was nominated for and won multiple awards; it won five
academy awards in the 73rd academy awards including best picture.
it gave me a big heart quake by its grand view and its lively characters.by the time maximus whispers his final words, assuring lucilla that lucius issafe, i'm moved by honor and justice. by the time juba is reverently buryingmaximus's totems of his wife and son, i'm. when i watched
gladiator, i'm struck by the quiet, ardent, even reverent heart at itscore, one that beats for the love of family. it's a heart that beats true thatmakes gladiator so rousing.
“be brave, my friend; be strong, my friend; stick to your belief, myfriend; stand to your principles, my friend”——just as he did. he, the formergeneral of rome, the slaver later, and the gladiator dying for his dreams atlast, implying a kind of strength that can make us always hold us heads up,never give up.
maximus, general of the armies of the north, wants nothing more than to gohome to his spanish farm, to his wife and young son, after too many yearsfighting for the glory of the roman empire. he is loved by marcus aurelius, theaging emperor, who wishes maximus be his successor. this arouses his soncommodus' anger when he heard about it. the power-hungry commodus kills hisfather and orders that maximus and his family should be executed. maximusmanages to escape his assassination, and races home only to find that he was toolate to save his family.
after burying them, maximus is found unconscious by slave traders andforced to fight for his life as a gladiator in arena. during this time, he gainsnotoriety through his impressive victories as a gladiator, ultimately reachingthe historic roman colosseum. in his first event, he skillfully leads a band ofgladiators to defeat an opposing force of chariots and archers, earning thecrowd's praise through his heroics.
maximus later survives when he is forced into a match against tigris ofgaul, rome's only undefeated gladiator. maximus avoids being killed by tigersreleased into the arena, which furthers commodus' frustration, as it seems hecannot kill maximus or stop his ascending popularity.
now desperate to have maximus killed, commodus arranges a duel with him inthe arena. unknown to the crowd, commodus stabs maximus before they enter thearena.
with his dying words maximus carries out marcus ' commands, calling for theslaves to be freed, and power in rome to be transferred to the senate. lucillareiterates his wishes, reminding
everyone that he was a soldier of rome and that his memory should behonored.
he lost his beloved wife and cute boy; he lost his authorities, but he wonhis glories, he won his battles, he won the respect forever, and he wonhimself.
powerful and loving family bonds provide the strength maximus needs totriumph here -- bonds between himself and his murdered wife and child, himselfand the very concept of rome.
in my eyes, maximus is a hero, a real man with strong spirit andresponsibility. he worth the honor people give him forever.
in the matter of courage we all have our limits. there never was a hero whodid not have his bounds. i suppose it may be said of nelson and all the otherswhose courage has been advertised that there came times in their lives whentheir bravery knew it had come to its limit.
i have found mine a good many times. sometimes this was expected--often itwas unexpected. i know a man who is not afraid to sleep with a rattle-snake, butyou could not get him to sleep with a safety-razor.
i never had the courage to talk across a long, narrow room. i should be atthe end of the room facing all the audience. if i attempt to talk across a roomi find myself turning this way and that, and thus at alternate periods i havepart of the audience behind me. you ought never to have any part of the audiencebehind you; you never can tell what they are going to do.
i'll sit down.
It’s beyond reproach that we will come across all kinds of difficulties andchallenges in our life time .Some will be subjected to frequent sadness .Somewill lose their way to move on .Thus, only when we equip ourselves with hope andcourage can we finally succeed in the uncertain future.
Forrest Gump showed so great courage in the movie that he touched me a lot. For one thing,no matter when and where Jenny got into trouble ,Forrest Gumpwould bring her out of it without thinking how dangerous the situation would be.Maybe we should all fell ashamed that we love ourselves more than we love love, but Forrest showed great courage in love .For another,Forrest gump risked hislife to save Bubba in the war. It’s courage that helped Forrest gain a series ofhonor after war .Forrest Gump is beautiful for his perseverance and touchesothers with his courage.
A person can’t do without courage in terms of love and friendship ,letalone life . A weak person may avoid the difficulties ,but a person with couragewill face up to it head-on. Therefore, let’equip ourselves with greatcourage.
Hemingway often thought of courage as a person's ability to be calm andcontrolled in the face of death. His theme is presented in his novel "For Whomthe Bell Tolls?" the story "The Old Man and the Sea" and in our textbook "ADay's Wait".By misunderstanding a different thermometer the boy thought he wasrunning a high fever and would soon die.But he took his death bravely and waitedquietly for it.The boy showed us he had courage.
I think such a definition of courage is far from enough.Courage should notbe limited and related only to death. In ordinary life there are common thingsthat also show a person's courage. For example,on a bus trip,a thief was tryingto steal a girl's purse. Some people saw it,but kept quiet. They were afraid to berevenged by the thief. The brave stood out and stopped the thief.
Courage means truth and justice to me.The person in a high position oftenhear songs in praise of him. Some people are sincere. Some are only flattering thesuperior in their own favor. The leader also needs courage to welcome criticismas well as those who have the courage to criticize him.Such courage may comefrom mutual understanding.I think a man of courage will value truth andjustice, and not hesitate in his actions to do what he thinks is right,There isno such word as fear in his dictionary.
