What is nature? It's everything that exists in the world independently ofpeople, such as pants and animals, earth and rocks, and the weather.
Now more and more people are focusing on the nature. It is no doubt thatthe nature is important to every human being. No nature, no life. Because of thesupplies of the nature, we have lived happily for a long time. And we started togain every thing available from the nature. And this lasted so long a time.Today, people have discovered that the nature around is getting worse andworse.
What is threatening the nature? Air and water pollution, overharvesting ofplant and animal species, overpopulation and so on. Overpopulation is thebiggest source of pollution. Let's take overpopulation as an example.
What does overpopulation feel like? When we move slowly through the city ina tazi. When we enter a crowded slum district. When the temperature is high andwhen the air is thick with dust and smoke. The streets are crowded with people.The streets seem alive with people. People eating. People washing. Peopletalking. People sleeping. People visiting each other, arguing and screaming.People relieving themselves. People pushing their hands through the taxiwindows, begging. People leading animals. People, people, people, people. As wedrive slowly through the crowd, sounding the taxi's horn, the dust, heat, noiseand cooking fires made it like a scene from hell! I admit, frightening.
To the nature, overpopulation is a big problem. More people, morepollution. And the big population is threatening the nature every second.
The rapid rise in world population is not creating problems only for thedeveloping countries. The whole world faces the problem that raw materials arebeing used up at an increasing rate and food production can not keep up with thepopulation increase. People in rich countries make the heaviest demands on theworld's resources, its food, fuel and land, and cause the most pollution. A babyborn in the United States will use in his lifetime 30 times more of the world'sresources than a baby born in India. Unless all the countries of the world takeunited action to deal with the population explosion there will be more and morepeople fighting for a share of less and less land, food and fuel, and the futurewill bring poverty, misery and war to us all.
For most of the developing countries, it is a good idea to control thepopulation growth. For example, China has carried out birth control for years.And this plan has a great effect on the world population.
If the population continues to increase, if the air and water continue tobe polluted, if we don't do something to protect wild-plant and wildlife specieswill be declining. Species and biological communities have difficulty adaptingto change. Economic opportunities and the quality of life of future generationsare also put at risk. By protecting nature, we protect ourselves.
Let's unite together, hand in hand we stand all across the land.
We can make this world in which to live. Hand in hand. Control thepopulation growth. Take good care of our nature.
Good afternoon, my honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen and fellowcontestants:
I feel so happy to have the chance to make a speech. The title of my speechis Protect the Environment, Protect Ourselves. I hope you will like it.
Everybody knows waste paper and used coke cans are discarded everywhere.You might have seen plastic bags flying in the sky and getting caught in thetrees when the wind blows or maybe you have seen old cans floating in the riversand polluting the water. Our environment is the place in which we live, but itis being ruined by us.
There is a story about house and trees. It is said that a man’s house wassurrounded by a lot of trees. Though the wind was strong, that man could have agood rest under the trees. How comfortable the life was! One day, that manwanted to enlarge his house, so he cut down all the trees. Then the autumn camewithout the protection. The strong wind blew the roof of the house into the sky.The whole house was gone with the wind. What a pity! But that’s the price peoplehave to pay for destroying in the ecology balance. People shouldn’t beshort-sighted. Protecting the environment is everyone’s task.
As you know, there are four kinds of pollution. They are air pollution,water pollution, waste pollution and noise pollution. But what can we do tosolve the pollution? I think, firstly, we can make cars that don’t pollute theenvironment. We can ask companies to use modern clean technology. In some bigcities, we can limit the number of cars. Secondly, we can try to use less waterand make sure that we do not pollute the water. We can tell factories that theyare not allowed to pour waste water into the lakes and rivers. Thirdly, weshould not throw rubbish in parks and cities. We can pick up rubbish if we seeit. We can put more rubbish bins in our parks and cities. Fourthly, we can livefar from the noise and make the laws to limit the noise.
The air, water and the whole atmosphere directly influenced our lives, suchas the air, people may cough and it will lead to cancer. So we must try our bestto keep the world clean and tidy. To reach it, I want to put forward threepoints to everybody---Point 1: don’t spit and liter; Point 2: don’t draw on thewall; Point 3: clean the streets every day.
In order to make the environment clean, let’s join our hands together tomake the world better.
Thank you!
Water is the source of life
Earth looks like a big blue marble; from high above the Earth and from themoon, the planet gleams and shines. The blue water in the oceans and seas of theEarth makes a dramatic image.Water is the source of this beauty and the sourceof life on Earth. It is the reason people can live on this planet. Water iseverywhere.
Water is in rock deep under the ground, in natural holding areas.In a realsense, water keeps Earth alive. The last drop of water will be the world's humantears. We Chinese are one of the 12 water-poor countries, as people waste, waterless and less. However, there are many waste of water, for example: some of thechildren bought water gun filled with water shooting water everywhere; there aresome students hand-washing after washing bowls,
or not turn off the faucet, waste a lot of water... .... Yunnan-GuizhouPlateau, where the recent prolonged drought, making survival of the populationthere is facing a serious threat to address this problem, we in China 1.3billion to develop awareness of water conservation. Therefore, I appeal to youhere: "Take action at water saving
Stop earth mother from crying!
Environment - how can we help protect it?
Our planet is in trouble!Almost every day we seem to hear of yet anotherproblem affecting the environment - and what a list of problems!- pollution,acidrain,global warming,the destruction of rainforests and other wild habitats,thedecline and extinction of thousands of species of animals and plants.and soon.
Nowadays,most of us know that these threats exist and that humans havecaused them.Many of us are very worried about the future of our planet andunless we can find a way of solving the problems we have made then theenvironment will suffer even more.
It all sounds so depressing - but we certainly mustn't despair!Every one ofus,whatever age we are,can do something to help slow down and reverse some ofthe damage.We cannot leave the problem-solving entirely to the experts - we allhave a responsibility for our environment.We must learn to live in a sustainableway i.e.learn to use our natural resources which includeair,freshwater,forests,wildlife,farmland and seas without damaging them.Aspopulations expand and lifestyles change,we must keep the World in goodcondition so that future generations will have the same natural resources thatwe have.
Here are just a few ideas to help you to do something to protect ourenvironment.
.plant more trees;
.saving energy and water;
.minimise waste;
.use as much public transport as you can;
.protect wild animals.
DEMAND for graduates in the UK with skills related to sustainability isbooming. Academia is waking up to the need to train specialists in greenarchitecture, chemistry and engineering.
Dean Millar founded the world’s first ever BSc course in Renewable Energyat Exeter University after working as an industry consultant.
He said: “A lot of companies were complaining that there was a lack ofbright young people suitably trained to work in the renewables business.”
Now his course has around 90 students learning the ins and outs of biomass,tidal, solar and offshore wind power.
Their career prospects are incredibly bright. Employment opportunities arenot just limited to the energy sector, but segue into the regulatory and,increasingly, investment sectors as well.
“The big boys are moving in. The returns to be had are significant,especially in terms of wind development,” said Millar. “Financial firms needexpertise across the board so they can make sensible investment decisions.”
Students on York University’s Master’s course in Green Chemistry areideally placed to take advantage of the growing demand in industry for graduateswith waste minimization skills.
Professor James Clark is founder of York’s Green Chemistry Centre forExcellence and the world’s leading green chemistry journal, Green Chemistry. Hesaid: “We are now talking to producers of automobiles, electronics, furnitureand pharmaceuticals, people who need to use chemistry but don’t think ofthemselves as chemists.”
As waste production legislation becomes increasingly strict, thetraditional emphasis on making as much of a chemical as possible is shiftingtowards minimizing the waste that process creates. “A lot of chemicals are madefrom petroleum, but we are developing sustainable ways to make carbon, typicallyfrom biomass such as dead plants and trees,” said professor Clark.
All of last year’s graduates quickly found employment, some receivingmultiple job offers in a variety of different fields.
Li Li, a 26-year-old Chinese postgraduate student, graduated from York in20_. She said:
“I hadn’t heard about green chemistry in China. It was a new area and I wascurious. Now the government back home needs people who know about theseprinciples.”
Deep in the heart of Wales, 400 students at the Centre for AlternativeTechnology’s (CAT) Graduate School of the Environment are busy designing andbuilding everything from high insulation wood housing to wind power turbines.With energy costs rising, building firms are increasingly looking to minimizethe energy wasted heating and lighting homes, a service CAT students arewell-equipped to provide.
A new institute is being built to meet the burgeoning demand for places anda distance learning facility will be launched next September so foreign studentscan complete CAT courses from home.
The expertise being taught on these courses is essential to a continuallyexpanding range of companies and government authorities. Yet there is a largergoal at stake; the students are at the forefront of the battle against climatechange. In the words of Dean Millar, “If we’re going to save the planet, we needto start turning these people out in big numbers.”
