美丽与丑陋只不过是瞬间的事，雨果的《巴黎圣母院》就表现了这一主题。虽然这似乎并没有多大的意义，但毕竟雨果写这篇文章的时候，他不过只有二十多岁。恐怕他在其中只是想讲述这样的一个故事，提高自己描绘故事情节的能力。但这个故事却有许多吸引人的地方。

吉卜赛女郎爱斯梅拉达在中世纪的法国靠卖艺为生，在一次“错误的审判”帮助了巴黎圣母院的敲钟人卡齐莫多。这是个极其丑陋的人，雨果描绘他丑陋外貌的语句不亚于描绘一个十足肮脏的怪物。他小的时候被抛弃在巴黎圣母院，一个神甫本着由他弟弟而生的怜悯之情“解救”了他。这神甫后来变成了主教代理，同时也成为了卡齐莫多的父亲。而主教代理却疯狂的爱上了吉卜赛女郎，他不断的在公众面前诋毁她，甚至陷害她入狱，借此压抑着自己心中的激情。卡齐莫多解救了吉卜赛女郎，并与她相处在巴黎圣母院的塔楼里。到了这里，我们不禁要发问：解救这美丽女郎的为什么是这个丑八怪?难道不应当是一个“帅哥”去拯救了她吗?书中并不缺少这样的人物呀。而雨果创造这样一个畸形的存在，是不是故意以这个存在来吸引读者?

但接下来的情节发展却由不得我们多想，故事立即就以一个悲哀的结尾结束了。爱斯梅拉达被绞死;主教代理则被愤怒的卡齐莫多推下了塔楼，摔的是血肉模糊;而卡齐莫多带着爱斯梅拉达的尸体永远长眠于一个死人窟里。书的结尾写了这么一段话，令刚读此书的我立即呆住了。后来人到死人窟里寻找他人尸体的时候，引出了故事的最终结局：爱斯梅拉达与卡齐莫多的尸体变成了两具白骨，而这白骨也在那群人的不小心触碰中变成了尘埃。这是本书的最后一句话，故事的终结是一个完完整整的人的自然的终结，而作为雨果练笔的巴黎圣母院故事到此结束。显然，雨果到最后没有了对作为练笔之书的激情，只是给了故事一个很“自然”的结局。

全书主要可以分为几块内容——简爱在舅妈家的生活，在学校的生活，在桑菲尔德庄园的生活，以及最后与圣约翰的生活。其中，幼年的生活为她具有反叛精神的灵魂打下了基础，而学校的生活给予向往自由的个性与丰富灵魂了的知识。而最后两地的生活，则让她的灵魂彻底觉醒

简爱是个怎样的人呢?这很难去评价。一方面，她具有高度独立自主的灵魂，渴望证明自己，另一方面，她又是一个被自己追求自尊的灵魂过度束缚的人。

为什么这么说呢?是想，如果桑菲尔德庄园没有毁去，罗切斯特也没有失去所有，简爱能真正平等的与他在一起吗?
